Arktika embodies the Metro series’ grim futuristic feel despite not being a Metro game, taking place in the frozen wastelands of Russia where environmental disasters have reshaped both the land and its inhabitants. It’s not to say Arktika.1 isn’t without its clear flaws, but the end result is decidedly a net positive that gives you exactly what you came for in the first place: a ridiculously good looking game that goes pew pew pew. Money comes in abundance, meaning you can purchase pretty much any gun you want by the end of the second level.Īrktika.1 is a first-person VR shooter that makes more than a few smart choices in its design, something that may have you thinking twice before dismissing its admittedly limited node-based teleportation style lock, stock, and barrel (holographic sight and flashlight too). The game also gets significantly easier as you upgrade your weapons and buy new ones. Ironically, though, in bringing the VR shooter that much closer to the more traditional console and PC experience, some of the genre’s tropes and issues manage to wriggle their way in too. On paper, the team created something many of us have been crying out for a shooter that lasts longer than two hours in which you don’t stand in the same room fighting off waves of enemies but instead progress through a tightly-designed world. Perhaps it’s best that 4A sticks to what it knows for its Oculus Rift debut, though.

So when I heard the developers of the superb Metro series were making a VR shooter, I was hopeful that 4A Games’ stellar reputation for crafting powerful and foreboding worlds would translate well to VR.
